Acid Reflux Remedies

By: Jennifer Maughan

Acid reflux remedies can help patients manage the pain and discomfort associated with flareups. Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid empties back into the esophagus and the harsh substance irritates the lining. Lifestyle, genetics and diet all contribute to the frequency and severity of acid reflux. Symptoms include heartburn, nausea, sore throat, chest pains, bloating and a bitter taste in the mouth.

Antacids
Familiar to most people, antacids can range from over the counter versions for mild symptoms to prescribed antacids. Antacids contain magnesium, calcium and aluminum to neutralize the acid in the stomach. However, antacids are usually a temporary relief for minor symptoms or are used in tandem with stronger medication that is generally better suited to remedy the condition over the long term. Antacids are a good first line of defense against the symptoms of acid reflux.

Proton Pump Inhibitors
These drugs, marketed under names including Prilosec and Prevacid, target the secretion of acid in the stomach by affecting the cells of the stomach wall. While digestive enzymes are still secreted to assist with the digestive process, the stomach acid is made less acidic and therefore causing less irritation to the esophagus when stomach contents spill into the area. While they provide dramatic relief, the medicines have some serious side effects, such as increasing risk for osteoporosis.

Histamine H2 Blockers
Blocking histamines in the stomach area reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. Marketed with names like Pepcid AC, Tagamet and Zantac, H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. When used in conjunction with antacids, the two medicines work to first neutralize existing acid, then cease production of new acids.

Prokinetics
Prokinetics cause the stomach to empty faster so that the stomach does not continue to produce acids to break down foods. The drugs can also help make the lower esophagal valve stronger and more capable of resisting when stomach juices start to back up. Despite frequent side effects, prokinetics are a popular remedy for acid reflux.
