Home Treatment of a Boil

By: Lisa Bower

Home treatment of a boil is easy and inexpensive and really, boils are best treated in the home. If the primary treatments you try at home don't work, you can try seeing a doctor, but most home treatments are proven to work.

One of the first things you should try to do when treating a boil is apply warm compresses to the area. This will help you manage the pain. Additionally, this will help get the pus out of the boil. You can lance the boil, but this does run the risk of proving to be quite painful and it might make the infection worse. Instead, warm compresses ensure that you can draw the pus out slowly and deliberately. After about a week and a half, the boil should burst so that you can continue treatment.

Once the boil has burst and the pus begins to drain, you will then want to wash the area with a strong antibacterial soap until the pus is gone. This is incredibly important - boils are contagious and the bacteria in the pus can spread to other areas of your skin or to other people. Once you wash away the pus, apply ointment and a bandage to the infected area. You should wash the infected area two times a day.

If you have a boil, it is important to start treatment as soon as possible. This will prevent you from forming more boils and will save you a lot of time and pain. If you apply warm compresses early on, the heat will increase your circulation and help your body to fight the infection early on. The larger a boil is, the more painful it may be. Additionally, the larger a boil, the harder it will be to treat.
