Canker Sore Remedies
Canker sore remedies are aimed to eliminate the painful lesions inside the mouth that affect the inner lining of the cheeks, lips, under the tongue and along the gum line. There are natural canker sore treatments available that are designed to alleviate the pain, an over-the-counter canker sore treatment and in some cases, prescriptions from a medical doctor for more severe cases.
The canker sore may be a single bump or present itself in a cluster with white or yellowing coloring.
Remedies
Many home remedies are available, most of which use natural items found in health food stores and supermarkets. Most require preparing a mouthwash to swish around inside the mouth, focusing directly on the canker sore. When using a mouthwash or rinse, once the area has been thoroughly swished and saturated, spit out the rinse; do not swallow.
Rinsing and direct applications include rinsing with:
- Aloe juice
- Mild over-the-counter mouthwash
- Warm water and salt
- Baking soda with warm water
- A mixture of one part hydrogen peroxide to three parts water, used twice a day
- Baking soda or salt placed directly on the sore
- Alum on the sores twice a day
- Raw onion on the canker sore
- Eating fresh papaya fruit
Treatments
Besides home remedies, over-the-counter ointments specifically formulated for internal use and applied directly to the cancer sore are available at local drug stores. For more severe cases where the sores are large, last longer than two weeks, interfere with eating and drinking due to excessive pain, cause fever or you experience frequent outbreaks of the sores, visit your doctor so he can determine what may be causing the sores and the treatment to prescribe.
