These home remedies for constipation gentle on your system, though some of these constipation remedies work faster than others. If you want to avoid harsh laxatives, try these ideas for constipation relief, but only when you know you'll have quick access to the bathroom if your system responds quickly.

Home remedies for constipation include the familiar ideas, like prune juice, and some more uncommon suggestions as well.

  • Mix a spoonful of baking powder in a glass of water and drink it quickly. This is said to bring relief in 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Try drinking aloe vera juice to balance the intestinal flora and restore regularity.
  • Some people get relief from eating fresh blueberries
  • Mix the juice of half a lemon or half a lime, along with a half teaspoon of sugar in a glass of water. Drink this first thing in the morning, before you have anything else to eat or drink.
  • This concoction is nicknamed “The Bomb”—one cup of coffee, mixed with a cup of prune juice and 30 cc of Milk of Magnesia. Serve it warm at bedtime for relief in the morning. (This is a trick often used in nursing homes!)
  • Molasses is suggested as a cure for constipation—try taking two tablespoons before bed. If you prefer, try a tablespoon of brown sugar, followed by a glass of water.
  • Mango is a natural source of constipation relief, as is pineapple.
  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of Epsom salt with a half glass of warm water and drink.
  • Fennel is thought to be a natural constipation reliever. Mix fennel seeds in a glass of warm water and drink each night before bedtime.
  • Mix 1-2 teaspoons almond oil in warm milk and drink before bedtime.
  • Make a juice of ½ carrot juice and ½ spinach juice and drink before bed.

As you can see, many of the popular home remedies for constipation relief contain either fruit or vegetables and are taken before bedtime. Drinking plenty of water, eating enough fiber and getting physical exercise are all important habits to both prevent and relieve constipation.
