There are several methods on how to clean ear wax including the unsubstantiated method of using an ear wax candle. Ear wax, also know as cerumen, is a protective sticky substance generated by the body’s natural defense process to prevent foreign items, dust, dirt or small bugs from entering the ear canal.

Having ear wax in normal quantities is healthy for the ears, but wax produced in excessive amounts will build up to cause pain and possible hearing loss. Some people tend to have more wax produced than others do and are at more risk for blockage problems.

Cleaning Methods
The following is a list of options for cleaning ear wax:

• Apply several drops of warm water, baby oil, glycerin or mineral oil to the ear canal using a dropper. Allow the liquid to sit for several minutes before draining the fluid from the ear. Flush with warm water and dry with a cotton swab or cotton ball.
• Apply several drops of olive oil at room temperature to the ear two to three times a day. Allow the oil to rest inside the ear for 15 minutes. Repeat the procedure for several days. Use a gentle warm water flush to remove softened wax.
• Use an over-the-counter wax removal kit placing the liquid into the ear for several minutes and using a syringe to remove wax.
• Use several drops of hydrogen peroxide or a mixture of 1 part water, 1 part vinegar and 2 parts hydrogen peroxide to clean the ear then use a syringe filled with warm water and gently flush out the wax.

Impacted wax will require the services of a health care provider. Using a small instrument known as a curette, the physician with the use of a scope uses the curette to scoop out pre-softened wax.

Consult with a health care provided before attempting to remove impacted wax or if the ear is infected. A physician will diagnose the ear, determine treatment and medication and remove severe wax buildup using proper instruments and techniques. 

If the eardrum is damaged in any way, check with a physician before applying liquids to the ear canal.

Candling Method
With the candling method, a long, cone shaped candle is placed just inside the ear. The wick is lit and allowed to burn for several minutes. The burning candle supposedly creates a vacuum effect. Upon removal from the ear, the candle tip will be covered with the softened ear wax. This process is dangerous to the ear because of leakage of hot wax into the ear canal, which can cause infection, pain and damage the eardrum.
