Symptoms of Heartburn

heartburn2

Symptoms of heartburn are hard to ignore. That burning sensation is always noticeable and always uncomfortable. Heartburn is when stomach acid seeps into the esophagus, causing irritation. This irritation causes the burning sensation most noticeable with heartburn. However, the burning is not the only symptom caused by heartburn.

Common Symptoms of Heartburn

  • A burning sensation in the chest and throat is the most common symptom of heartburn. This burning is caused by acid escaping the stomach and irritating the esophagus. This burning feeling can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few days. If the burning sensation does last more than a few hours, you may have a serious problem and should consult your doctor.
  • An acidic taste at the back of the mouth or throat can be a symptom of heartburn. This acid may taste hot, bitter, sour or even salty, but it will definitely burn some. This taste is caused by the acid not only flushing into the esophagus, but making its way up into the mouth.
  • Chest pains after bending over, lying down, eating or drinking can be a sign of heartburn. However, these pains should come with a burning sensation and acidic taste. If they do not, the chest pains could be a sign of a heart attack.
  • Difficulty swallowing and feeling like you have a lump in your throat are both symptoms of heartburn. This is caused by the irritation in the esophagus from stomach acid.

Heartburn Remedies
There are many different heartburn remedies available, from lifestyle changes to antacids. Drinking a little water can help, as can mixing some baking soda with water. Drinking a little ginger, cinnamon or chamomile tea can help alleviate the burning sensation you get from heartburn. However, make sure the teas are pure and not mixed with other types of tea.
