Home Remedies for Heartburn

Home remedies for heartburn can be a little hit and miss. If you only get heartburn on rare occasion, a home remedy may be all you need. Heartburn is when acid escapes the stomach and irritates the esophagus. It can cause a burning sensation in the chest and throat.

The burning sensation caused by heartburn is usually the biggest symptom for which people want to find a remedy. However, while some remedies, such as milk, may stop the burn right now, it can make things worse later on. If you’re trying to remedy your heartburn, you want to use something that will help stop the problem now and in the future.

Home Remedies for Heartburn

  • Apples, especially eaten fresh, are a great way to quickly stop the pain of heartburn. The juice helps wash the acid away and the fiber helps soak it up. Cooked apples can also help, but they are not nearly as effective.
  • Apple cider vinegar is a good acid that can help calm down the bad acids that cause heartburn. Try mixing one tablespoon of vinegar with 1/2 cup of water. Drink it slowly to help ease the burning sensation.
  • Baking soda is an all star when it comes to home remedies for heartburn. You want to take about 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda mixed in with 1/2 cup of water. Drink it slowly to help ease the burning sensation caused by heartburn.
  • Brown rice is a bland food that can help soak up excess stomach acids that cause heartburn. It will not necessarily soothe the burning sensation right away, but is helpful for staving off further problems.
  • Cinnamon can help relieve the symptoms of heartburn. It can be taken as a tea, but make sure it’s a pure cinnamon tea, not a blend. You can also use cinnamon in your cooking to help ease the potential symptoms of heartburn.
  • Ginger can help relive the burning sensation of heartburn when taken in tea form, or help ease or prevent heartburn when taken in pill form.
  • Soda crackers contain baking soda and are a great way to help heartburn when you’re on the run. The plain crackers help absorb the stomach acid in addition to neutralizing it. This helps give both immediate and somewhat lasting relief from heartburn.
  • Water can offer temporary relief from heartburn by flushing the acids out of the esophagus. Beware of drinking too much water, though, or you may bloat you stomach, causing acid to spout into the esophagus again.
