How to Cure Indigestion

Need to know how to cure indigestion? Unfortunately, there is truly only one cure for indigestion, and that is prevention. However, there are many ways to treat indigestion, also known as dyspepsia. Antacids or water may provide a quick fix, while smart eating habits may provide a long term fix.

Indigestion Cures
Antacids may provide temporary relief for indigestion. However, the antacids also may not work, depending on the underlying reasons for the indigestion. If antacids aren’t enough, there are medications called H-2-receptor antagonists that work like a stronger antacid. These can be over-the-counter or prescription. Again, depending on the reason for the indigestion, these medications may or may not work.

Indigestion Prevention
The only true cure for indigestion is proper prevention. Prevention can mean avoiding certain foods or eating habits. These preventative tips will help reduce the chance of indigestion greatly. However, if you have a pre-existing problem, you may not be able to fully cure your indigestion.

  • Avoid swallowing air while eating. This means no talking while chewing your food. It also means you need to chew your food with your mouth closed. These two measures will help reduce your air intake while swallowing.
  • Avoid overloading your stomach. If you take it easy on your stomach, your stomach will take it easy on you. Make things easier to digest by chewing your food completely before swallowing. Take smaller bites and eat smaller portions. Never over-eat or eat too quickly.
  • Avoid acid-producing foods. Indigestion may not be caused by stomach acid, but it can be aggravated by it. Avoid foods that will cause you stomach to fill with acids. Foods to avoid include spicy food, citrus fruits, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
  • Avoid reclining after eating. You want to be upright to allow time for your food to digest properly. This means you should not sit in a reclined position or lay down for at least an hour after you eat. You should never sleep right after eating either. Wait at least a few hours after consuming food before going to bed.
  • Avoid drinking too much fluid. Gulping down a large amount of any beverage is bad for your stomach. It can quickly bloat the stomach and relax the opening to the esophagus. It’s especially important to limit fluid intake while eating. Try drinking fluids between meals instead of during them.
  • Avoid restricting your stomach when it is full. Try to wear loose fitting clothes around your stomach, especially if you’re eating. Never exercise right after consuming food, as this can cause many issues, including tightening of the stomach muscles which can hinder digestion.
