Common Indigestion Symptoms

indigestion

Indigestion symptoms are not a pleasant experience. However, they’re nothing to get worried about, unless the indigestion itself is a symptom of an underlying problem. Indigestion, also known as dyspepsia, is a vague term that refers to discomfort in your abdomen. The discomfort is usually in the upper abdomen and only temporary.

Indigestion Symptoms

  • Feeling unnaturally full before, during or after a small meal can be a sign of indigestion. You may start to feel full before you have eaten anything or after you have eaten only a small amount. You feeling of fullness may also last longer than it normal.
  • Abdomen pain can be a symptom of indigestion, especially if it is located in the upper abdomen. Indigestion pain is usually located below your throat and above your lower stomach. The pain can be anywhere from mild to serious and is often a sharp burning or stinging sensation.
  • Nausea can sometimes be a symptom of indigestion. This nausea tends to manifest as a general queasiness in your stomach and a potential aversion to food.
  • Bloating is often a strong symptom of indigestion. The bloating may also lead to other indigestion symptoms, such as nausea or feeling full.

Indigestion Cures

  • Antacids are the easiest and quickest fix for indigestion. They help neutralize stomach acid and stop the bloating and pain associated with indigestion. Antacids are over-the-counter medicines and can be purchased just about anywhere.
  • H-2-receptor antagonists are basically stronger antacids that help reduce the acid levels in your stomach. They work slowly for the long term and don’t offer the same immediate relief as antacids. These can be over-the-counter or prescription, depending on the severity of your problem.
  • Lifestyle changes are really the only way to cure indigestion. Eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of liquids and avoiding over-eating can all help cure your indigestion problems for good. You should also try to chew your food slowly and completely before swallowing.
