Pink Eye Symptoms

Pink eye symptoms are hard to ignore. Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is very noticeable and very contagious. It is almost impossible to contract pink eye and not notice the many symptoms associated with the infection.

Pink eye is when the conjunctiva of the eye becomes irritated. Pink eye can be due to a viral or bacteria infection. Pink eye treatments vary according to the reason for the infection. The bacteria type can be treated with antibiotics. The viral type can be treated with proper care. The viral form of pink eye is the most common, and the most contagious.

Pink Eye Symptoms

• Redness in the whites of the eyes is the most noticeable symptom of pink eye. This redness may take over part or all of the whites of the eyes.

• Swollen and mildly red eyelids can be a symptom of pink eye. Due to the swelling, the eyelids may feel sensitive and sore, causing some redness.

• Sensitivity to light can be a symptom of pink eye. This sensitivity is due to the conjunctiva irritation. The sensitivity to light can be anywhere from mild to severe, depending on the severity of the infection.

• Drainage from the eye can be a symptom of pink eye. This drainage can be minor or severe. In its severe form the drainage tends to dry up, causing crusty flakes to surround the eye. In the worst cases, this crust glues the eyelid shut and must be gently removed before the eyes can be opened again.

• Itching or burning on the eye can be a symptom of pink eye. This bothersome itching can be in or around the eye, depending on the severity of the infection. This itching and burning can also give you the sensation that there is something stuck in your eye.

• Abnormal amounts of tearing can be a symptom of pink eye. This tearing is different than the drainage you may experience. The tearing is your eyes natural way of trying to clear the infection.
