Alleviating Dizzy Spells

Dizzy spells are more than just feeling a little off-balance once in awhile. If you do not deal with this problem, spells could get worse and you may not be able to drive or perform your best at school or work. When you have dizzy spells, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. The following are some of the things you can do to alleviate this feeling.

Hydrate
Though it may seem obvious, it is important to drink a lot of water throughout the day, have three regular meals and to get a good night's sleep. Doing these things will lessen the frequency of dizzy spells. Often, people feel dizzy because they have not eaten or drank enough throughout the day. If your blood pressure or sugar levels are too low, this too may cause a dizzy spell. Thus, it pays to eat something like an apple when you are feeling off-balance.

Move Slowly
Sometimes, people feel dizzy because they stood up too fast. The blood may rush too fast and this can cause some disorientation. Thus, if you have been sleeping or sitting in one spot for a long period of time, try standing up more slowly.

Rest
When experiencing an intense bout with dizziness or vertigo, take the time to rest. Taking a short nap and resting in a dark room can really make all the difference. If you can not walk from one room to the next without feeling dizzy, you should avoid using heavy machinery or even driving. Dizziness is a sign that your reflexes are off. You do not want to be a danger to other people.

Seek Treatment
If your dizziness is serious, you may need to seek medical treatment. For example, a doctor may administer IV fluids if you are extremely dehydrated or may give you oxygen if he or she believes this to be a cause of your dizzy spell. In some cases, you may need to take medicine, such as antihistamines or nausea pills, to alleviate the dizziness, especially if it's been brought on by a cold or an inner ear issue.
