How Long Does a Yeast Infection Last?

By: Rachel Mork

How long does a yeast infection last? Will you ever get relief? When you have a yeast infection, it can seem like your whole world has screeched to a halt. You're in pain, you itch like crazy in a spot you can't scratch, it hurts to use the restroom and you just feel gross.

Most yeast infections respond to over-the-counter anti-fungal medications within a couple days, clearing up completely within a week of beginning treatment. Home remedies such as yogurt or garlic take longer, usually four to five days before providing tangible relief. If you have a yeast infection that is not responding to an over-the-counter medication or a home remedy, you may have one of the following problems:

It May Not Be What You Think It Is
You might not be treating a yeast infection after all. You may have a case of bacterial vaginitis or trichomoniasis, both of which may produce similar symptoms to a yeast infection. See your doctor to get a proper diagnosis if the yeast infection does not clear up within a week.

You May Be Passing It Back and Forth
If you've had intercourse with your partner during the course of your yeast infection, he may have also gotten a yeast infection. Essentially, you may be passing it back and forth. Refrain from intercourse for a week or until you are sure the infection is gone.

You Haven't Given Your Crotch Room to Breathe
Yeast loves moist, dark, warm places. You'll need to wear loose, cotton panties and change any panties liners very frequently in order to give your crotch time to air out and recover. Refrain from wearing wet bathing suits, nylons, tights or tight nylon panties until you are sure your yeast infection is gone.
