How to Get Rid of a Yeast Infection

By: Rachel Mork

Wondering how to get rid of a yeast infection? If you've been plagued with vaginal itching and burning accompanied by a white, thick cottage cheese-like discharge, you've probably got a yeast infection. Take the following steps to get rid of your yeast infection:

Make Sure It's Really a Yeast Infection
Don't assume all vaginal irritation is from a yeast infection. If the discharge is grey-white and smells fishy or is green-yellow and frothy, you may have a different kind of vaginitis that requires prescription medicine. If you aren't sure you have a yeast infection, see your doctor for a formal diagnosis.

Switch to Cotton Panties and Loose Clothing
The first thing you need to do is change into clean, cotton, loose panties and clothing. Keep your legs apart as much as possible to allow the area to dry out and cool down, slowing the growth of the yeast. Remember: Yeast grows best in moist, warm and dark places. Give that yeast infection the converse environment.

Use an Anti-Fungal Medication
You can find over-the-counter anti-fungal medications at your local drugstore. Follow the directions carefully. You may also get an external cream with the anti-fungal medication, as such a cream may bring you significant relief when applied as needed. Try to keep as much of the medication inside you for as long as possible, but know that some will leak out and you should use panty liners. Change those liners as often as possible so you can maintain that dry, cool environment mentioned above.

Try a Natural Yeast Infection Cure
If you don't want to use a commercial anti-fungal medication, try using raw garlic cloves both internally and in your vagina or try eating yogurt and douching with yogurt. Make sure the yogurt contains live and active cultures.

Protect Your Vaginal Area
Refrain from intercourse, do not take baths, thoroughly rinse soap from your groin area and do not douche. Try not to itch or further irritate your vagina.

See Your Doctor
If the yeast infection does not clear up in three days, see your doctor to make sure you really are dealing with yeast, not something else.
