Acupuncture Cupping Therapy

Acupuncture cupping therapy is a form of acupuncture used to treat abdominal problems, respiratory illness and pain. In the acupuncture cupping process, glass cups are placed on the body (usually on the back) and then the air pressure inside the glass is changed, causing the skin and tissue inside the cups to be pulled up into the vacuum created inside the cups. This alternative therapy focuses on intensely pulling on the skin and tissue to stimulate energy flows along intended acupressure spots, instigating healing energy flows throughout the body and to the intended areas needing attention.

The pulling of the skin and tissue stimulates blood flow and better circulation. It also stimulates the nervous system along specific points. By cupping certain pressure points, pain relief, stimulation of the digestive system, relief of respiratory problems and reduction of menstrual cramps can be achieved.

The way the pressure changes inside the cups varies. Some cups are specially designed such that a pump can be attached and the air inside the cup can be drawn out. Other cups are simply heated and then quickly placed on the body so the heat will draw the skin and tissue up into the cup. Sometimes the area is pricked with a needle beforehand, allowing a small amount of bloodletting to prepare the area for the cupping. In other cases, a lubricant is applied to the skin and the cups are slid around the body. This is called gliding cupping.

Cupping can be mildly painful but usually is only uncomfortable, feeling as if someone is gently pulling on the skin. It typically leaves marks or bruises, especially on the places where the rims of the cups were. Each cupping session lasts about fifteen minutes.

This practice is an Asian technique that has been carried into Western medicine along with acupressure and acupuncture. If you are interested in trying cupping, seek out a licensed acupuncturist.
