Ayurvedic Use of Arjuna for Heart Health

By: Rachel Mork

Heart health has become one of the most important concerns of the medical world today. While many people are taking daily doses of aspirin or prescription medicines, Ayurvedic doctors have been prescribing arjuna for heart patients for centuries.

Arjuna is derived from the bark of the Arjuna tree. It is powdered and distilled down, then reconstituted in any number of forms - from a delicious jam to be spread on toast to a tonic or a pill. Indian physicians believe so strongly in this herbal remedy that they encourage all people of age to take this as a daily regimen, whether the person has shown symptoms of heart disease or not.

Ayurvedic arjuna preparations are commonly taken as daily preventative dietary supplements for improving heart health. It has a calming effect on the nervous system, reducing effects of stress and anxiety. It also helps to lower blood pressure, promote healthy heart function, and suppress the absorption of lipids in the blood, making it an ideal resource for those suffering from high blood pressure and high cholesterol. It also helps supplement liver health, providing especially good support for those who have cirrhosis of the liver.

Arjuna also contains natural supplies of iron and calcium, making it a popular dietary supplement for the elderly and those concerned about preventing oesteoperosis.

If you are taking prescription heart medicine prescribed by a Western doctor, you will want to consult either an Ayurvedic physician or an Allopathic (Western) doctor before you go off any prescriptions and rely on Arjuna to solve your heart-related health issues.  However, you will most likely be able to take both medications, or wean yourself from one to the other, with the advice and oversight of a doctor familiar with both allopathic and Ayurvedic medical practices.

Arjuna is usually taken with milk or with a meal. Some people find that they develop mild constipation when using this supplement for long periods of time.
