Ayurvedic Massage

Ayurvedic massage combines the ancient Indian medical practices outlined in Ayurveda with the family practice of giving and receiving massages on a regular basis. Ayurvedic massage uses a liberal amount of oils (so as to not aggravate vata by irritating dry skin), a vigorous touch, and special attention to special pressure points, referred to as "marmas," which are intended to stimulate certain organ systems. A great deal of emphasis is placed on stimulating the digestive system in Ayurveda, and the same can be said about Ayurvedic massage. Many of the pressure points and massage techniques are employed with the intention of stimulating proper digestion and elimination.

Ayuvedic massage is tailored to your body's specific needs. There are four main kinds of massage offered by Ayurvedic massage thereapists, each with a specific purpose. Massage is performed with the intention to eliminate toxins through purification, strengthen the muscle tone, relax the body or rejuvenate the body.

Ayurvedic massage is sometimes called hard body massage because of the vigorous quality of the massage. Hands, feet, elbows, forearms and well-oiled balls may be used for the massage.  Liberal usage of oil allows the massage therapist to use his feet while he hangs onto a rope to maintain balance to massage your muscles in a vigorous manner.  He will slide his feet up and down your back, arms and legs, dipping his foot into the bowl of Ayurvedic massage oil as needed to maintain a slippery surface.  After stimulating the muscles, the massage therapist will use his well-oiled hands to massage the smaller muscles, including your abdominal area. The point of this massage is both to keep the muscles supple and stretched properly, but also to stimulate the lymph, circulatory and digestive systems.

The massage will be prescribed to address your specific needs, which will most likely be attributed to the imbalance of the doshas. For example, if you have been stressed out, an Ayurvedic massage therapist will massage the center of your forehead, which is referred to as your third eye, because this will relax you and help you to focus and concentrate better. Massage oils may be rubbed into the base of your spine and head to promote better memory retention. Certain oils are used to balance out dominant or aggravated doshas. For instance, a dominant vata will be balanced by the use of a sesame based oil, whereas a dominant kapha is balanced with the use of a mustard or olive oil based massage oil.

Ayurvedic massages are available at spas and clinics with an Indian influence.
