Chiropractic techniques may vary from clinic to clinic, but chiropractic medicine on the whole focuses on standard techniques and procedures that are widely accepted in chiropractic circles. The following is a list of common chiropractic techniques and their definitions.
Adjustment
An adjustment is a technique in which a joint is manipulated in such a manner as to improve the integrity of the joint. There are force adjustments, minimum force adjustments and non-force adjustments. There are over 60 different kinds of adjustments within these categories, all of which are done with the intention of improving overall health by improving the integrity of the skeletal system and the corresponding muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves.
Electrical Muscle Stimulation
This is a controlled application of a mild electrical impulse used to stimulate a physiological response that will encourage the body to heal itself.
Directional Chiropractic Technique
In this technique, pressure is applied from the thumb to the spine so that leg measurements can be made so that subluxations and pelvic imbalances can be detected and corrected.
Flexion-distraction Technique
In this technique, the patient is lying face down on the adjustment table while the spine is stretched through both manual and traction, focusing on specific spinal segments.
Lumbo-pelvic Technique
This technique involves adjustment of the lower back through tilting and manipulating the lumbar vertebrae and pelvic bones to achieve correct alignment of the spine and pelvis.
Manipulation
This is an adjustment of the positioning of a joint done using manual pressure and shifting of the skeletal structure, done to relieve the joint of undue pressure or to prevent unhealthy pressure, rubbing or constriction.
Massage
This is the use of manual touching, stroking, rubbing and manipulation of both surface and deep soft tissue to stimulate healing, better circulation and detoxification. Chiropractic massage often employs the use of traction as an added method of relieving pain or releasing pressure.
Nimmo Method
This technique makes use of pressure on trigger points in order to relax muscles that are purported to be pulling the vertebrae out of proper alignment.
Traction
The elevation of a body part for an extended period of time such that the skeletal system is relieved of or put under additional pressure.
