Common Reasons People Turn to Naturopathic Doctors

By: Rachel Mork

Why would people try naturopathic doctors when there are so many Western doctors offering to solve their health care problems? Why would anyone trust the minority health care module? Why is naturopathic medicine growing in popularity? A number of factors are drawing more people to try this alternative medical model.

One of the main reasons why people turn to naturopathic medicine is because they have not had success after trying everything their Western (allopathic) doctor had to offer. Many people suffering from migraines, chronic pain, insomnia, allergies, fertility and reproductive challenges and other illnesses are finding their Western doctors can do little more than dull the pain or mask the symptoms.

Because naturopathic doctors try to fix the root of the problem, promoting holistic good health through the use of herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies, dietary and lifestyle changes, acupuncture and chiropractics, people are seeking out new ways to treat health issues. They turn to naturopathic medicine because they hope that in treating the whole body, they will find solutions to the root problems causing the symptoms that cause them such discomfort.

Another reason people turn to naturopathic medicine is because there is a growing concern about the artificial substances we (as Westerners) are putting into our bodies. They are concerned that the extra hormones and chemicals in our food and water sources compounded by the prescription drugs we take to deal with our ailments are causing as many health issues as they resolve.

People who turn to naturopathic healing hope to stimulate the body's ability to heal itself through substances naturally occurring in the earth or practices using the body's own trigger points, eliminating the need to use foreign chemicals. This is a philosophical reason to naturopathic medicine founded in the idea that the earth provides everything we need for health and wellness.

Some people turn to naturopathy because they want to open themselves up to all of the possible solutions available while dealing with a health issue. Naturopathy has been practiced in one form or another since the birth of mankind, so it makes sense that at least some (if not all) of these time-tested practices would be effective for use today. When someone is diagnosed with a serious or chronic health problem, he or she may decide to try alternative health practices in addition to or in place of the solutions offered by an allopathic doctor.

The word "holism" is rooted in the Greek "holos" meaning whole. It supports the idea that the universe cannot be broken down to the sum of its parts. Holistic medicine is therefore an approach to health, healing and wellness that aims to treat the patient as a complete entity without reducing him or her to mere symptoms, physical or otherwise.
