Hot Hands: The Truth About Reiki

By: Conny Manero

Introduced to the Western world in the late 1800s by Japanese-born Mikao Usui, Reiki is a form of energy healing. Reiki, pronounced "ray key," is by no means intended to replace traditional medicine, but rather to add to it. Reiki restores energy, allowing the body as well as the mind to benefit. Unfortunately, as one expert noted, a lot of stories are going around about this healing practice. The following will put the spotlight on hot hands: the truth about Reiki.

Who can learn Reiki?

Some people have a natural talent for healing and can learn Reiki. If you think you can, or if you are interested, there are courses in which a Reiki master teaches his students to heal others over three or four courses. During training, the master will transmit energy to the student and teach him how to use his own abilities.

What happens during a Reiki session?

When requesting a Reiki session, you will be asked to sit or lie down after which the Reiki practitioner will place his hands (also called hot hands) directly on your fully clothed body. Another technique is to hold his hands above your clothes or skin without actually touching you. His goal is to send positive energy through the palms of his hands into a specific area of your body. You may feel a warming of your skin in the area treated or experience a tingling sensation. There is nothing to be afraid of as this process is completely safe.

Not every person experiences Reiki in the same way. Some people become more energetic after a session, while others feel a sense of calm. Others may feel at peace, while someone else might feel slightly emotional.

How is Reiki different?

Reiki is an easy, gradual, gentle way of healing -- so easy, in fact, that a child could learn the hot hands technique. There are no risks, because nothing can go wrong. The same cannot be said of pranic healing, which is similar to Reiki but a lot more aggressive. Certain factors must be taken into account before a session, and even then pranic healing can be overpowering.

Reiki and spirituality

You don't have to be a believer to practice or receive Reiki. If you are a believer, your personal religion doesn't matter. Reiki has nothing to do with religion, even though this type of healing has its roots in Buddhism.

Practice Reiki yourself

Should you have plenty of enthusiasm for Reiki healing but find yourself a little short on cash, you can practice the healing on yourself. You can either visit a healer a few times and have him teach you the technique, or you can pick up a book or go online to research hot hands: the truth about Reiki healing.
