Jikiden Reiki

By: Alice Langholt

Jikiden Reiki (or "handed down") is as close to the original Usui teachings as other variations on the traditional practice. The Usui Reiki taught in the Western world has been modified through the years by different teachers. Jikiden Reiki is thought to come in a straight line from the source of its discovery by Mikao Usui.

The focus of Jikiden Reiki is primarily on healing. Other Reiki types focus on spiritual development. It is taught as a technique for self healing and healing others. Although there is a spiritual side to Reiki, it is independent of religious teachings. Reiki practitioners tend to become spiritual people though, whether they become more interested in their own religion or not. This is due to the profound experience of channeling life force energy, which many feel as a spiritual source.

Reiki is a form of energy healing, designed to promote relaxation and enhance balance throughout the entire person: physical, emotional and spiritual. Reiki originated in Japan in 1922, by Mikao Usui, who passed down his learning to just a few students. Among these students is the late Chiyoko Yamaguchi. Chiyoko's son, Tadeo Yamaguchi, carries on her tradition by passing down this version of Reiki.

Unique Features of Jikiden Reiki:

  • Jikiden Reiki's direct lineage from the original Reiki is notable. Courses in Jikiden Reiki are taught in person only.
  • There are no hand positions associated with Jikiden Reiki. Instead, the practitioner is taught to use his instinct and scanning methods to determine hand placement during treatment.
  • The attunements and levels are called Shoden (level 1), Okuden (level 2), and the third (Teacher) level, Shihan is split into two parts. The two parts are Shihan-Kaku (Assistant Teacher) and Shihan proper. The Shoden, (final level) allows one to teach Jikiden Reiki and attune others.
  • In order to proceed to the highest level, Dai-Shihan, one must be approved by Tado Yamaguchi himself. Only those at this level may attune others to the full Shihan-Kaku level.

Reiki healing taps into the power of relaxation and redirection of the flow of life energy force through the body's meridians, triggering natural healing powers inherent in the body.

To become a reiki energy practitioner or a master, you will need to follow the reiki attunement process. You cannot conduct a reiki education or study reiki by reading about it or hearing about it. It is something you need to undergo and experience for you to learn how to perform it on yourself and on others.

The term reiki is a Japanese word meaning "Universal Life Force Energy" and is a system for channeling power into the body for the purpose of healing.

I vividly remember the first time I was aware of receiving Reiki. I was sitting in our local Spirituality shop trying desperately to stay awake and be social. I lay down on the couch to rest between events, and soon a massage therapist friend was rubbing my back.
