Lung cancer warning signs can be confusing. In the beginning, lung cancer warning signs can mimic a cold or the flu. They often come and go fleetingly for some time before alarming the patient with sudden persistence.

There are several types of lung cancer, but all exhibit similar warning signs. Small-cell lung cancer, nonsmall- or large cell-lung cancer and mesothelioma lung cancer all attack the lungs, with the first two attacking the inside of the lungs and mesothelioma attacking the lining of the lungs. A variety of exposures cause these types of lung cancers.

Early Warning Signs
Lung cancer warning signs can begin with a cough that almost goes away, but never really does. For many individuals who have chronic illnesses or diseases, such as asthma or a variety of allergies, these signs may go unnoticed at first. Because an individual with asthma or allergies often experiences shortness of breath and wheezing that frequently accompanies these illnesses, additional coughing or shortness of breath may not immediately raise a red flag.

Fatigue, which can be another lung cancer warning sign, also accompanies many chronic illnesses such as anemia and rheumatoid arthritis. While it is sometimes hard to differentiate between one illness and another, individuals with chronic illnesses should keep a diary and know their body and the symptoms each illness can cause. Don’t overlook the obvious. Should a symptom such as fatigue or a cough become frequent or persistent, continue or worsen, it’s imperative to contact a doctor immediately.

What Is Cancer?
Cancer begins in the cells. Normal cells grow and divide according to needs within the body. Abnormal cells and cancerous cells continually to divide as if the process had no shut-off valve. The abnormal cells continue to divide until they have created a mass or tumor. These tumors can be either malignant or benign. Benign tumors are not cancerous. Malignant tumors are cancerous.

Untreated malignant tumors can break off and send abnormal cells into the bloodstream. As these cells break off and travel, they create new tumors in other organs or in the lymphatic system. Because the lymphatic system is the body’s defense against bacteria and infection, its cells and tissues can be found in every part of the body.

Lung cancer is particularly prone to spreading, because the lungs are a part of the cardiovascular system. Early detection and treatment of lung cancer offers the best chance at survival; once the tumors start to spread, they are almost impossible to control. Make sure you know the warning signs of lung cancer, and see your doctor promptly if you have any concerns.
