5 Mosquito Bite Remedies

By: Rachel Mork

These five mosquito bite remedies are made from items you probably already have in your household. If you've just come inside from a night out, itching from a bunch of nasty mosquito bites, try these mosquito bite remedies in this order for quick and easy relief.

Temperature Change
As soon as you get back home, take a quick hot shower or hot bath to relieve your skin from the itch of those mosquito bites. Later on, if the itching continues, fill a cloth with ice and ice the bites to numb your skin. Don't leave the ice on for more than 20 minutes at a time. You don't want to damage your skin.

Extract the Mosquito Saliva Using a Paste
After your hot shower or bath, make a paste from either baking soda and water or crushed aspirin and water and apply the paste to every bite. Allow the paste to sit on the bites for about 20 minutes. This mosquito bite treatment draws out the offending saliva the mosquito deposited when she bit you.

Antihistamine
Take an oral antihistamine, such as Benadryl, to relieve the itching and to help your body produce fewer histamines in response to the mosquito saliva that was injected into all those bites. Wash off the paste after 20 minutes have passed. Use warm, soapy water, followed by cool water.

Citrus Juice
If the itching remains, swab a bit of fresh lemon or lime juice on the bites to soothe your itchy skin. The citrus juice might sting a little bit, but it will reduce the itch.

Ward Off Secondary Infections With Ointment
Try to resist scratching, since scratching can break the skin, leading to secondary infections. Apply a thin layer of triple antibiotic ointment, preferably one with a topical analgesic in it to reduce itching, on each of the bites.
