Neck Exercises for Pain Relief

By: Brian Neese

Whether it is for pain relief, or for associated pain due to an injury, there are a number of neck exercises that can restore movement and lessen muscle pain and postural strain.

Contact your doctor if you experience any unusual responses. In each exercise move slowly and keep your mouth relaxed. If you experience stiffness, move gently into it. There may be discomfort, but not severe pain.

Laying Down

  • While touching above your chest, nod your head forward until you feel the muscles on the front of your neck hardening, and then move back to starting position.
  • Rotate your neck from side to side, trying to get your chin in line with your shoulder.
  • On your side with a couple of pillows, roll your shoulder blade back across your ribs towards the center of your back. Repeat on the other side.

Sitting

  • Correct your posture by gently drawing your shoulder blades back and down. Repeat frequently to help your posture.
  • Similar to the exercise while sitting down, rotate your neck from side to side gradually.
  • Move your neck from side to side, tilting your head gently.
  • Gently bend your head upwards and downwards.

Use these exercises in conjunction with your treatment plan. They may be repeated throughout the day for maximum results. After consulting a health professional once you have experienced some relief, you can look into various neck strengthening exercises.

If you are not seeing a health care professional for your pain, you should strongly consider it. Many causes of neck pain may be as a result of a physical condition. Your doctor or chiropractor can identify the cause and help you with treatment, as well as being able to provide you with exercises and techniques for preventing future neck pain. Once you speak to a doctor, you will be able to actively get to the root of the problem, instead of risking your health if you have not consulted with a health professional.
