Effective Fitness Training Tips

By: Rachel Mork

If you're serious about getting fit, you'll want to heed the following fitness training tips:

Get assessed by a professional
Before you start a fitness program, make sure you've got the right training and equipment. You can do this by going through an orientation session with a personal trainer at the gym, who will show you how to use the equipment properly and will assess your weight, fitness level and strength, if you wish. Another option is to visit your doctor for a physical and discussion about appropriate fitness training programs. If you are interested in a specific sport, enroll in a class so you learn the right techniques and form, and find out what equipment you will need. Some examples are running clubs, tennis classes, golf lessons or rowing with a crew.

Find a way to measure your efforts
If you want to see results, you need to measure your efforts and your results. Start your fitness training plan by assessing your weight, skills, muscles tone or strength, writing down the appropriate information. Reassess these same factors each month, keeping a record of your progress. Record your efforts to improve your physical fitness in a log or notebook. By writing down this information, you will be better equipped to discover what efforts are working and what are not, as well as to see your progress or lack thereof.

Push yourself just enough
You'll want to build up your work out intensity slowly. If you are starting out in tennis, plan to play a couple times a week, not every day, to avoid getting a shoulder injury.  If you are a new runner, start by walking and running alternately until you build up to running without pain. You need to push yourself enough that each training session is challenging, but not so challenging that you are too sore to work out again the next day or that you injure yourself.

Do everything in your power to avoid injury
If you get injured, you'll set yourself back by weeks or even months in your pursuit of physical fitness. Stretch before and after every workout. Make sure you have the proper equipment-running shoes for runners to prevent an ankle or knee injury, ear drops for swimmers to prevent swimmer's ear, a helmet if you're a biker to prevent an injury if you wipe out. If something starts to hurt while you're working out, stop. Don't push it. An injury is not worth it.

Support your fitness training with your lifestyle
If you want to improve your fitness training, you'll need to adjust other factors in your life as well. Quit smoking if you smoke; improve your diet if you have poor eating habits. Make sure you get enough sleep and take rest days to allow your body to recover from intense work out sessions. By supporting your fitness training in this manner, you'll see better results sooner.
