Stretching Flexibility Through Strength Training

By: Julie Knapp

When you think of flexibility, the first thing that comes to mind is probably stretching exercises or yoga. Improving your stretching flexibility through strength training is one important method to try.

While it might seem logical that building muscles, which can shorten muscle length, would actually decrease flexibility, that's not really true. Strength training is important to your ability to stretch because stronger muscles are naturally more able to relax into a stretch. You should also always stretch after a strength training workout like lifting weights to lengthen the muscles.

If you want to improve stretching and flexibility as you strength train, you need to be sure to do so using your full range of motion. That's why certain types of muscle building techniques work better than others when it comes to flexibility.

You should have a training program that's balanced so that you're working on all muscles equally, rather than focusing on a few muscles and neglecting others. Lifting dumbbells allows for the greatest range of motion and trendy kettlebell workouts may be even better. When you swing the kettlebell, you are increasing flexibility as you strength train.
