Gym Wear Essentials

By: Lisa Bower

Your gym wear affects your workout more than you might think. Looking good is one thing, but feeling good while you're on the treadmill or doing squats in gym wear that gives you the full range of movement you need is key.

One of the most essential pieces of gym wear a woman can invest in is a good sports bra. Both men and women should invest in shorts that allow for circulation but aren't going to drop down during squats or while running. Keep shorts at a reasonable length; above or just after the knee are safe bets. Cotton or lycra-based t-shirts and tank tops are best because they are comfortable and will keep you cool once you work up a sweat.

The kind of workout you are doing will affect the clothing you wear. If you are doing yoga. you will want to wear clothing that will stay in place. You don't want a shirt that will flip over your head in the middle of a pose: Yoga is not about flashing people. If you are lifting weights, you may want to wear something more baggy or a mesh-type of top so that you keep cool and can soak up the sweat so it does not get in your way.

When it comes to men's gym wear and women's gym wear, you want clothing that is loose but form-fitting. You don't want to invest in clothing that is too big because it could get in the way when you are working out on a machine or when you are trying to contort your body into one of many yoga poses. Also, it is always a good idea to layer up. This way, you can take layers off once you start to warm up. Try investing in some fleece pullovers or in some sweatshirts. You can wear these over mesh t-shirts and tank tops.
