The Surprising, Easy Benefits of Pilates

By: Julie Knapp

Just about every health club has Pilates on the class schedule and specialized studios are quickly cropping up around the country. You've probably also read that some of Hollywood's hottest bodies give credit to the popular exercise. There credit is rightfully given since there are several benefits of Pilates including increasing your range of motion, improving abdominal strength and tone, easing back pain and boosting circulation.

Strengthen Your Body
Even though Pilates is best known for strengthening your core, it can also strengthen and lengthen your spine, which helps prevent back problems. Since it improves your posture, you might even notice that you appear a bit taller.  Because many of the moves in Pilates training require great control and careful alignment, the exercises will help you gain better body control. Each move stabilizes your core and that control will translate to better coordination and balance and helps to prevent injuries down the road.

An Easy Workout
Pilates is a workout that just about anyone can do anywhere. It's not a weight bearing activity, so it's easy on your muscles and joints. In fact, if you do suffer from osteoarthritis, Pilates stretches can actually help you manage back, neck and joint pain. The workout produces joint lubricants and improves circulation, which can relieve stiffness and aches.

You don't need any special kind of equipment for Pilates either-a mat isn't absolutely necessary. You don't need to spend a lot of time on the exercise either. A ten minute session can be beneficial. If you're an exercise novice or simply don't have a lot of free time, try a Pilates workout.
