Pilates Moves Vs. Yoga - Which is Better?

By: Julie Knapp

You might assume Pilates moves and yoga are one in the same since they're both zero impact exercises done on a mat, but they're actually very unique from one another. Both exercises improve flexibility, posture, coordination and stress levels, but the ways you achieve those goals and the end results are different. When it comes down to looking at Pilates vs. yoga, which one is right for you?

What is Pilates?
Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates originally to help rehabilitate war veterans, but later became a practice used by dancers. It's a full body workout that stretches and strengthens muscles and can help with grace and proper alignment.

When the workout was first created, Pilates was performed on machines that used pulleys and cables to help the body to contort into unusual positions. Even though other muscles are used, just about every movement focuses on "the powerhouse" or your core. In addition to helping you build a long and lean body, Pilates is a wonderful way to get closer to stronger and more defined abdominal muscles.

What is Yoga?
Yoga is based on Eastern philosophies. The practice unites mind, body and spirit, incorporating meditation and breath work. During yoga, you'll move through a series of poses, often holding these positions to build strength or stretch your muscles. Some positions are more challenging than others, ranging from a simple forward bend to a handstand.

Pace also varies depending on the style of yoga you choose-beginners will need to go slow, but athletes might prefer to work at a quick and laboring speed. You'll gain balance in both your body and mind through your concentration during the workout, and hopefully end your practice feeling relaxed and refreshed.
