Tricep Exercises for Toning

By: Rachel Mork

Want to learn tricep exercises that will give you toned arms like Michelle Obama's? Fitness exercises that tone the triceps can give your arms that definition everyone desires. Most likely your fitness club has weight machines that will isolate your triceps, but these other exercises will work just as well.

Pull Ups and Dips
Grab hold of those pull up handlebars and pull yourself up, using the assist if need be. When you're done, grab a hold of the dip handlebars and dip until you reach muscle failure in your triceps. Remember to keep your elbows in close to your sides and to lift and lower yourself your body weight slowly and steadily, refusing to jerk or use momentum or gravity to your advantage. Your goal is to challenge your triceps while protecting them from injury.

Yoga Pose - Chattaranga
This yoga move works the triceps brilliantly. Start out in plank position, with your arms extended and your body straight as a board, your weight on your hands and toes. Lower your body down, bending the elbows slowly and keeping your elbows right up against your sides, until your stomach hits the floor. This is chattaranga. From chattaranga you may want to go into a cobra pose, with your back arched, or you may want to return to plank position or downward dog.

Lying Tricep Extension
For this exercise, you will need a barbell or two dumbbells of appropriate weight. Lie on your back on a bench with your knees bent to protect your back. With the barbell or dumbbells in your hands, point your elbows to the ceiling and carefully lower the barbell or dumbbells to your forehead. Keeping your elbows absolutely still, slowly press the barbell or dumbbells into a full extension. Slowly lower the barbell or dumbbells back to the starting position and repeat until you are close to muscle failure. Rest and repeat set.

After exercising, be sure to stretch triceps well so you don't have cramps or risk injury.
