Gout Home Remedies

By: Rachel Mork

There are plenty of gout home remedies to choose from, some providing immediate relief while other remedies are long-term relief plans. Try these remedies independent of one another so you can determine which gout remedy is best for you.

Immediate Relief Gout Home Remedies
As soon as gout hits, try these home remedies for quick relief.

  • Elevate the joint: By elevating the aching joint, you will relieve extra pressure, which can bring quick relief.
  • Ice the joint: Wrap the joint in a cool gel pack or surround the joint with ice wrapped in a towel. Ice for 20- to 30-minute intervals.
  • Apply mustard paste: In between icing sessions, you can apply a paste made from ground mustard seed and whole wheat powder, mixed in a one-to-one ratio with water.
  • Drink lots of water with lemon: Drink as much water as you have stomach. Water will flush uric acid from your system. Add fresh lemon slices or lemon juice to your water; lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which breaks up uric acid crystals and allows the body to flush the excess uric acid from your system,
  • Take ibuprofen: But don't take acetaminophen or aspirin, which can actually cause more problems due to a tendency to retain uric acid. Ibuprofen acts as an anti-inflammatory and does not inhibit the flushing of uric acid from your system.

Long-Term Cures to Get Rid of Gout
If you frequently experience gout, you may want to incorporate at least one gout remedy into your daily routine. Some suggestions are:

  • Eat cherries or drink cherry juice daily: Cherries seem to help prevent gout, most likely because they are so high in vitamin C. Try either eating a cup of fresh cherries or drinking cherry juice - the real juice, not the artificially flavored stuff - daily.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Take a homemade tonic made from two teaspoons of cider vinegar mixed with two teaspoons of honey, twice daily.
  • Make lemon water your drink of choice: Drink plenty of water each day, adding lemon slices or squeezing lemon juice into the water to boost your vitamin C intake.
  • Follow a gout diet: Limit alcohol consumption and eat a diet low in purines and high in vitamin C.
  • Eat raw garlic: Regular consumption of garlic may reduce your episodes of gout.
