Improving Mild Hearing Loss

By: Julie Knapp

Hearing loss isn't always permanent. Some types of mild hearing loss, including noise induced hearing loss, can be improved. Don't be embarrassed to discuss your problem with your doctor and consider the following options to help you hear more.

Clearing Wax Build-Up
An excess build-up of earwax is a common cause of mild hearing loss. It can block the ear canal and reduce your level of hearing. If this is the cause of your mild hearing loss your doctor can use warm water and oil to loosen the wax, scoop out the wax or suction out the wax to improve your condition.

Medication
If an ear infection or a disease is causing your mild hearing loss, a simple prescription can clear up the problem.

Hearing Aids
For many who suffer from mild hearing loss, a hearing aid can make a big difference. The device transmits sounds to your ear using a microphone to gather sounds and an amplifier to make them louder. Before deciding on a hearing aid, you should try out a few different types to see which one works best for you. Sometimes hearing loss only affects higher frequencies, for example, so those people need an aid that only amplifies those frequencies.

Diet
Some studies have shown that certain nutrients can enhance cell production. While this solution isn't as tried and true, you may want to give it a try. Ask your doctor about taking supplements of acetyl-carnitine, coenzyme Q10, alpha-lipoic acid and glutathione.
