Medicinal Uses of Aloe Vera

Knowing all of the medicinal uses of aloe vera is sure to keep you happy and healthy. The aloe plant has long been praised for its medicinal benefits. In fact, the green, lily-looking plant has been used as far back as the 4th century BC for its healing properties. The plant can be used both internally and externally. The following are some of aloe vera's most common uses.

Aloe vera is most commonly used to heal external wounds, burns and hives. Once applied to a wound, it speeds up the recovery process. Aloe vera is also great because it will soothe the skin following a sunburn, cut or insect bite. While doing this, the aloe vera also moisturizes the skin so that scarring is less likely.

The plant is also useful in alleviating itching and swelling, which in turn can prevent infection and further injury. For example, if you had a serious sunburn, the aloe vera would not only make this less painful, but it would prevent the skin from swelling, bubbling up and peeling. The reverse is also true: Aloe has been known to effectively treat frostbite to prevent serious damage to one's appendages.

The plant has also been used as a laxative. Aloe vera has been proven to prevent the absorption of water in a person's bowels. This in turn increases the bowel's contents and thus speeds up such items' passage. Thus, aloe vera is a great treatment for constipation, stomach ulcers and other intestine-based problems.

The aforementioned laxative benefits have also been known to kill certain types of fungus and bacteria. Similarly, aloe vera has proven effective in fighting herpes and the chickenpox. Research is inconclusive, but scientists are currently testing aloe to see if it has any impact on blood diseases and cancerous cell growth. Only time will tell what aloe vera is completely capable of.
