Aromatherapy Massage Techniques

By: Rachel Mork

Everyone knows a massage is relaxing, right? What scientists are discovering is that aromatherapy massage techniques-massage performed with the use of oil infused with particular essential oils-actually increase sensations of relaxation and stimulate changes in the body that will boost immunity and fight infection.

In the many scientific studies evaluating the benefits of massage both with and without aromatherapy massage oils, participants are serviced by the same massage therapists, without any knowledge of the type of oil being used. While a participant might be able to identify an oil by its scent, most of the participants are not educated enough about essential oils to be able to identify which oils were being used. The results of these studies emphasize the fact that while massage in and of itself stimulates the body to heal itself, the use of particular essential oils increases the body's response by significant amounts.

Most Common Aromatherapy Oils
Three of the essential oils found to be particularly effective are lavender, sweet marjoram oil and cypress oil. These essential oils were mixed into a base of sweet almond oil and used to massage the entire body.

After the aromatherapy massage, participants in the studies had lower levels of cortisol in their bloodstreams. Cortisol is a hormone produced by your body when you endure high levels of stress. It can have negative effects on your physical health and emotional state of being.

The participants in the studies also showed evidence of immunity boosting responses in the bloodstream. When evaluated for psychological responses to the massage, it was reported that those who received the aromatherapy massages responded even more positively than those who received the control massages.

Some massage therapists go even further in their quest for the perfect massage session by using aromatherapy candles or herbal concoctions. It is important to make sure you do not use undiluted essential oils as they can be too intense for the skin and may irritate the nasal passages. Be sure to test oils and candles for allergic reactions before using them on your skin or lighting candles in your home or work space.
