What to Expect from Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage therapy might be right for you if you are interested in getting a strong, intense massage.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage therapy is similar to a Swedish massage. When getting a deep tissue massage, your masseuse will use firm, slow, pressured strokes to reach the deeper layers of muscles in your body. This treatment may be more focused on particular areas on your body rather than an overall massage.

Cautions
If you are looking for a soothing experience, ask for a different type of massage therapy. You are likely to feel some pain during deep tissue massage and may have some discomfort for a day or two after the massage has been completed. You may also feel a bit tired. This is not to say, however, that deep tissue massage is a tortuous experience. You will also experience a sense of well-being.

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy Benefits
This type of massage therapy is often used to help treat sports injuries as well as treat people who are recovering from accidents. In addition, people with fibromyalgia and chronic pain use this type of massage for relief. Deep tissue therapy can also increase your range of mobility.

Deep Tissue Massage Tips

  • Don’t eat a large meal before you get your massage.
  • Don’t drink any alcohol before your session.
  • Spend some time in the sauna or steam bath before your session to loosen your muscles before your massage.
  • Let your therapist know of any medical conditions that may be of concern, including if you are pregnant or have a heart condition.
  • Communicate with your therapist. Remember that each person has a different threshold of discomfort. Don’t be shy if you feel that your therapist is applying too much pressure.
  • If you have time, visit that sauna or steam bath again after your massage is done.
  • An invigorating shower may get rid of any tiredness that you feel after your treatment.
