Taking the Guesswork Out of Massage

By: Courtenay Madsen

Receiving a massage should calm the nerves and relax the mind, but for someone who has never had this experience, it could be just the opposite. Here are a few suggestions to follow before, during and after your first massage to leave you wanting more.

When choosing a massage therapist, ask a friend if she sees someone regularly because you'll know she trusts this person and it will calm any apprehensions you may have. If none of your friends have a therapist, look in the phone book or on the Web. If you have a specific injury you may want to find one who works in a chiropractor's office or physical therapy facility. If you need to relax and unwind, a spa might be a better environment for you. Make sure whoever you choose has a state issued massage provider license and an establishment license number. These numbers must be printed on all advertisements and business cards. It is illegal to practice without it.

If the therapist you are scheduling with works in a spa or medical office, there will be a receptionist answering your call and making your appointment. However, if the therapist you call has her own practice you will most likely leave a message. While patience is a virtue, one should not have to wait more than 48 hours for a return phone call. When scheduling the appointment there will be at least two types of massages to choose from: deep tissue or relaxation massage. Deep tissue massages are perfect for working out tight muscles caused by excessive driving, working on the computer for extended periods of time and sports injuries. Deep tissue massage can be painful, but are very beneficial to the body, so don't let this scare you away.

The other type of massage is a relaxation massage. This is wonderful for soothing nerves, dealing with insomnia, and relieving stress. There are many other types of massage, but these are the two most basic and will be offered most anywhere you go.

On the day of your appointment arrive ten minutes early and be prepared to complete required paperwork. If you if you are not asked to fill out an intake form, the therapist should inquire about your past medical history as this is of the utmost importance. While most people are cleared for massage 96 percent of the time, there are some conditions and diseases where massage is contraindicated. If they do not collect your past medical history then voice your concern and cancel your appointment. Please note, this does not happen often, but you should be aware of what to do should it occur. You will then be taken to the massage room. You will be asked to undress to your comfort level, and to lie down on the table under the top sheet, either facing up or down, depending on the therapist's preference. At this point, the number one question asked is, "How much clothing should I take off?"" This needs to be gaged by how comfortable you are with taking garments off while in the presence of someone you barely know. The less clothing on the body makes it easier for the therapist to do her job, but if you are not comfortable with disrobing then it should not be done. If you aren't relaxed then you won't benefit from the bodywork. Remember, it is a law to be covered with an opaque drape while receiving a massage out of respect for the client, as well as the therapist. The client should feel completely safe, and unexposed if draped properly.

During the massage keep in mind that it is your hour. If you would like more or less pressure then make sure you let the therapist know. Communication is necessary for optimal enjoyment during a massage. Also, whether there is conversation or not solely depends on the client's preference. A considerate massage therapist will stay quiet and maintain a serene ambiance making sure the client has a peaceful environment. If the therapist is talking in excess it is acceptable to request that she stops talking so you can rest.

Now the massage is done and the therapist excuses herself so you can dress and exit the room. Take your time as you sit up, because you may be dizzy after lying down and having the muscles massaged. When you are ready, go to the check out desk to pay for services rendered. If you are satisfied with the massage it is customary to tip. The massage therapist should instruct you to drink plenty of water after massage to prevent dehydration and to rid the body of toxins. She may also show you stretches that will help with any tight areas she may have found during the session.

Every massage therapist and facility varies, but these are just a few basic guidelines to take the guesswork out of receiving a massage. The most important things to remember are:

  • The establishment must have a state issued establishment license number and the therapist must have a separate state issued practitioner license number
  • The therapist should inquire about the client's medical history
  • The client should feel comfortable during the entire appointment

You are now ready to enjoy your first massage!
