How are Reflexology Socks Used?

By: Rachel Mork

If you're interested in practicing reflexology on yourself or a partner, you may find yourself frustrated with the complex maps you can print and follow at home. Reflexology is a relatively simple practice, but knowing where to massage in order to stimulate healing in specific body parts can be challenging. That's where reflexology socks come in.

Reflexology socks are socks with body maps printed right on them. You simply slip the socks on the foot to be treated and massage the areas desired. This allows you to focus on the pressure and strokes instead of constantly referring to a printed chart. Many reflexology socks come pre-moisturized so that the massage can be done without the use of additional oils, but you can also apply oil to the feet and perform a multi-purpose foot rub before slipping on the socks and following the patterns drawn on them for focused treatment.

Reflexology socks are used by massage therapists while they are in training. The socks help them memorize the patterns and stimulation points on the feet.

How Does Reflexology Work?
Reflexology works by stimulating the nerve endings in the hands and feet. Certain stimulation points are believed to stimulate other parts of the body. These points are also believed to open up the energy channels affecting those specific parts of the body, stimulating the body's ability to heal itself.

Most reflexology massage sessions start with a soothing foot bath and oiling of the foot, followed by a general foot massage, ending with focused pressure, stroking and prodding of the foot in the areas designated as stimulation points. You will be expected to tell the massage therapist what goals you have for the session. He or she will stimulate the areas of the foot that are responsible for improving your health in those areas.

Some of the most common reasons for seeking reflexology are to seek relief from symptoms of stress, to deal with headaches, to reduce unpleasant symptoms related to menstrual problems and to overcome infertility.
