Reflexology and Infertility

By: Rachel Mork

If you've been trying to get pregnant for a while, you may be frustrated with the invasive and expensive procedures you have been trying. One non-invasive practice that has gained popularity in Europe and is just beginning to find credence in the United States is the idea of using reflexology as a way to increase your ability to conceive.

It sounds crazy, doesn't it?  Getting a massage on your feet and hands to improve your chances of conceiving a child?  But it seems to work for many frustrated couples.

Reflexology is the massage of your feet and hands with an emphasis on certain pressure points. The feet and hands are believed to be loaded with nerves that somehow trigger the flow of energy and the stimulation of the body's ability to heal itself throughout the rest of the body.  When the reflexology massage therapist massages your feet and hands and conducts certain strokes and pressure techniques on specific parts of your feet and hands, he or she can unblock the energy paths that run through your body and stimulate such healthy activity as increased sperm production, ovulation, the production of healthy mucus that will act as a conduit for the sperm, etc.

Couples seeking reflexology therapy as a supplemental health care practice will want to schedule four to six treatments apiece. Both partners should go, since reflexology will get the entire body in good working order, making conception more likely. The reflexology massage therapist will tailor the treatments to each of you such that he or she will address whatever fertility complications have been diagnosed. Each treatment will take between 30 to 60 minutes.

One last benefit for couples struggling with infertility is this: reflexology massage will relax you, helping you release the tension and stress from the day. Being relaxed will also help your body become conducive to the idea of conception.

Reflexology has been practiced in one form or another for thousands of years. More recently, studies regarding the scientific basis behind reflexology began in the early 1900s in both Russia and Europe.

The answer is yes.

A regular massage session is known to benefit the body and mind in revitalizing the energy flow of our bodies. From time to time, you may find certain parts and functions of your body requiring specific attention that may not necessary be related to muscles and joints and in this case, you may want to consider a reflexology massage to target that particular area.
