There are several foods to avoid with hypothyroidism so you won't further inhibit the function of your thyroid.
All Soy Products
It's important that you don't eat soy products when trying to regulate your thyroid function. Soy products contain isoflavones called genistein that are believed to interfere with an enzyme called thyroid peroxidase. This enzyme is needed in order for your body to properly combine iodine and the two major hormones produced by your thyroid. Avoid soybeans, edamame, soy milk, soy ice cream, tofu and other soy products.
This might be the only time someone tells you not to eat your broccoli. Cruciferous vegetables contain isothiocyanates, a substance that is believed to block the production of thyroid peroxidase. If you cook cruciferous vegetables, the isothiocyanates are not as easily available to the body, so you can eat limited amounts of cooked crudités. However, you'll want to limit your intake of raw broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, mustard greens, rutabega, kohlrabi and turnips.
Protein Sources With High Levels of Hormones
If you aren't aware of this already, it's important that you learn that much of the meat we eat today comes from animals who were given hormones to help them grow faster, fatter and to resist disease before slaughter. These hormones are suspected of causing estrogen dominance problems. This hormonal imbalance is believed to cause thyroid inhibition, so you will want to buy only organic, hormone-free poultry, eggs, dairy products and meat.
Gluten, If Sensitive
Some people develop sensitivities to gluten, or wheat products, causing thyroid function issues. If you do not see improvement after making the dietary changes listed above, consider trying a gluten-free diet for three months and seeing if it makes a difference.
In any case, you may need more than dietary changes to control your thyroid imbalance issues. Make sure you get a formal diagnosis from your doctor, and ask about possible medications or treatments in addition to diet changes.
