How to Get Rid of the Flu

Nobody likes to be sick, so how to get rid of the flu is a process in which most people are highly interested.  While there is no real cure for influenza, there are some things you can do to get back on track to good health sooner than just letting the illness run its course naturally.

First Symptoms
Visit the doctor just as soon as you feel the first symptoms of the flu. Symptoms include head and muscle aches, chills, fatigue, high fever, dry cough, vomiting and diarrhea. If you have even a few of these symptoms, make an appointment and let the doctor know you may be coming down with the flu. The doctor can prescribe antiviral medicine to not only help shorten the length of time you feel sick, but also lessen the effect of the symptoms. Generally, antiviral medication is only effective as a flu treatment when taken in the first two days of influenza.

Over the Counter Medications
There are plenty of over the counter medicines that will relieve flu symptoms, making the worst of the influenza seem not quite as drawn out. The medicines include antihistamines for drying up mucus, cough suppressants, analgesics for fevers and aches and decongestants.

Treat the Body
To help the body fight off the influenza virus, it's important to treat it right. Let the body get plenty of rest and avoid any activities that require exertion, such as heavy lifting or exercise. Drinking plenty of fluids also helps the body stay hydrated when it is infected with the flu. Dehydration is common in people suffering from influenza. Drink products that replenish electrolytes, such as sports drinks, for maximum benefits.

Flu Vaccines
The best way to reduce the possibility of getting the flu is to take a flu shot, a vaccine created from dead influenza virus. The body then produces antibodies that will reside in the bloodstream. If the person later comes in contact with the flu virus, the antibodies can work faster and stop the flu virus from spreading before it even has a chance.
