Break down the decision making process by tackling your choices in five easy steps. Weighing the options could turn into an endless cycle of second-guessing and self doubt, but if you follow a strict plan of action, decision making can be easy.
Identify the Problem
Before you begin, be sure you have a clear picture of the problem at hand. If you understand the decision you need to make and can state it clearly, you'll be on your way to making the right decision.
Identify the Alternatives
Any decision that needs to be made offers multiple options or courses of possible action. Sometimes those alternatives aren't immediately clear, while you will find other instances in which there are so many alternatives on the table it's hard to weed through them all. Come up with all the alternatives, from the obvious to the obscure, and conduct research to make sure you've covered all your bases.
Consider Those Alternatives
Once you know what your options are, analyze each one. Weigh the pros and cons of each option, the implications of deciding in favor of that option and whether that option will serve your desired end result. Rank the options in order of your preference.
Make Your Decision
After you've identified and evaluated your alternatives, you should have your choices narrowed down to two or three. Review all the pros and cons and then listen to your gut feeling. If you have time, leave your decision making process alone for a few days and come back to it with a fresh mind. When you feel confident, make the final decision.
Once you make the decision, carry it out immediately. After implementing the decision, monitor it regularly to check the progress and to be sure that you've made the right choice. You can always make a new decision down the road and you can learn from every decision you make whether it's a success or not.
