Have you ever celebrated a big accomplishment and found yourself wondering what to do next? Sometimes getting everything you want can leave you feeling empty. Avoid the slump after finding success and learn to rediscover purpose and direction.
Enjoy Your Success
If you worked toward your accomplishment for a long time, be proud of yourself. Enjoy the benefits of seeing something through, from start to finish. Success is the reward for hard work and determination, so don't sell yourself short by not taking the time to properly embrace it. It isn't selfish to want to revel in the praise or admiration you may receive if your success is known to others.
If your success has a monetary benefit, reward yourself with a vacation or something similarly special. It can also feel good to share your success with others, so consider treating your friends to a night out or invite your family to share in a celebration. If you are single, you may feel a slump after success because you feel as though you don't have anyone special to share it with. Success is the gift that keeps on giving. Use your success to gain confidence and it could help you to meet someone new, or be able to give yourself completely to someone else.
Find a New Goal
The potential for success never stops. Once you have succeeded in one aspect of your life, instead of getting stuck in a rut because you no longer have something to work for, find a new goal to achieve.
If you think you have maxed out on what you can accomplish, you're dead wrong. Donald Trump didn't retire after making his first million, so why would you? After you get the big promotion at work you've wanted for two years, transfer that momentum toward losing weight or learning to play the guitar. Don't lose motivation, as you'll then sit around and feel as though your accomplishment was all for nothing.
Distract Yourself
If you worked your butt off for months to succeed and now you have ample free time, you could easily start to feel depressed because you feel as though you have nothing to do. Keep yourself busy. Do things you missed out on because you had been working towards that previous goal, such as joining a local club sports team, catching up on good movies you missed or taking in the art exhibit only in town for another week. Until you figure out what your next move or your next challenge, distract yourself by doing things you like to do or spending time with people you love.
Success is a great thing, something that not everyone gets to experience. The most important thing about success is that it is different to different people; happiness, however, means success to everyone. Embrace your success, share it with others, and then set out for the next accomplishment that is waiting for you.
