Getting a Grip on Stress

By: Marie Lorraine

When you're overworked or overburdened, life can become a chore. Too much stress can have a devastating effect on your emotional and physical well-being, your relationships, and even your career. Being a happier and more relaxed version of yourself is simply a matter of getting a grip on stress before it gets a grip on you.

Take some "me" time

Even if it's just 15 minutes, allowing yourself some "me" time at the end of the day can give you something to look forward to when life has been rough. Take a bubble bath, read a guilty pleasure book, or play some solitaire on your phone. Allow yourself to forget about the troubles of the day, and you might find that when your time is up you are able to see your problems through a new set of eyes.

Take care of your body

When your body is functioning at its best, you are better equipped to deal with stress. Try cutting down on caffeine and processed sugar, which can make you irritable, and make sure you are eating plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables. Exercise is another great way to deal with stress because it releases endorphins, which make you happier. A healthier body has more energy to deal with everyday stresses, and this should be a strong consideration when trying to get a grip on stress.

Find an outlet

When life circumstances have got you down, it is important to have a way to release negative emotions. Talking with a good friend, keeping a journal, or using a creative outlet such as painting or playing a musical instrument are all valid ways to address and work out stress in your life. If you feel that you need help beyond what you can do on your own, talking to a therapist or counselor is another great option. A professional can help you see your problems from an outside viewpoint, and teach healthy coping methods to reduce stress.
