Losing belly fat should be at or near the top of your weight loss wish list. Not only is belly fat unattractive, belly fat can be dangerous to your health.
Dangers of Belly Fat
Our bodies contain different types of fat. Belly fat may be more dangerous than other types, although any excess fat is not good in general for your overall health. Abdominal fat, particularly visceral fat, or the fat that surrounds the organs inside of your body in your abdomen, can lead to higher risks of developing type 2 diabetes, hardening of the arteries, strokes, heart attacks and sleep apnea. If you don't come down with any of these health problems, you are more likely to live longer.
How to Get Rid of Belly Fat
Eat a healthy, well balanced diet. Substitute polyunsaturated fats for saturated fats. Avoid processed foods and focus in on fresh fruits and vegetables. Include fish in your diet.
Regular exercise will help grind away at visceral fat. Vigorous exercise can help get rid of visceral fat that you have already accumulated, while moderate exercise will help you from accumulating new fat. Keep your exercise program varied to avoid boredom.
Avoid crash diet and exercise programs at all costs. Crash diets usually end up with the loss of water weight rather than fat weight. Therefore, you will most likely gain back any weight that you have lost after you stop the diet. Crash exercising is also a problem. It is counterproductive to having an exercise program if you can't exercise because you have injured yourself. In addition, you can't "focus" an exercise program on a specific part of your body. Don't bother spending your money on an exercise product that promises you that you will lose fat "right there, right away." It won't work.
Increase your physical activity as you get stronger. Look at long term changes in your eating habits. This approach will help you not only attack your belly fat, it will help you lose weight overall.
