Restorative Yoga Postures

Restorative yoga postures are performed with the intention of relaxation and rejuvenation.  These active relaxation beginner yoga poses are specially crafted to help you when you feel exhausted or tense. They are also helpful for recovery from injury, illness or after giving birth.

Many restorative poses involve the use of props so your body can rest while holding the positions (asanas).  You can actively hold the position without stressing your body or stretching to the point where relaxation is not possible. Try practicing pranayama (controlled breathing exercises) yoga and meditation while in restorative yoga poses for lower blood pressure and a lower heart rate. Focus on serene thoughts, a mantra or your breathing. The slow pace and the relaxation combine to allow deeper stretches that will increase flexibility.

Restorative practices focus especially on manipulating the spine into several different poses because, according to yogic science, a healthy spine equals a healthy you. Restorative poses are excellent for beginning yogi looking for a gentle yogic practice. The incredible stress relief associated with restorative yoga is a fabulous introduction to the benefits of yoga practice of all kinds.

Try this restorative yoga pose at home:

Supported Forward Bend
Sit on your yoga mat with your legs extended in front of you. Roll a small towel up and place it under your knees so your knees can bend slightly. Place a pillow on your lap. Bend forward, allowing your body to rest on the pillow and a deep stretch to form along your back, hips and hamstrings. Support your forehead on a second bolster or rolled up towel, and if needed, place a second bolster or towel under your knees. Breathe slowly and evenly, and allow your body to relax into the stretch. Stay in this position as long as is comfortable.
