How to Make Gel Candles

By: Helen Polaski

Learning how to make gel candles can be dangerous. Exploding candles and wicks that flame up erratically have been reported both in commercially made gel candles and homemade gel candles.

Even experienced candle makers should never, under any circumstance, make gel candles using items that are found around the house. Be safe: Order all gel candle materials from a certified dealer. Instructions on the proper methods for making gel candles can also be obtained from a certified candle dealer.

Fragrance oils, such as your favorite perfume, are not suitable for use in gel candles. The fragrance can pool or form pockets in the gel, thereby causing spurts, sparking and possibly exploding candles. However, a variety of manufacturers now create certified essential oils and colors that have been created especially for gel candles. Most supplies can be obtained on the Internet.

While clear glass is usually used in gel candles, most non-flammable containers will do. Clear glass, however, is the best container to use when embedding items into the candle. The sparkle of the gel is also more attractive through a clear glass container. Make sure containers are clean, have no flaws and are completely dry when you pour the gel into them.

When using embedded items, make sure they also are non-flammable. Items such as beach sand, gravel, small pebbles, marbles, shells and some costume jewelry and gems work well. When making a beach-themed candle, use small starfish, shells, sand and perhaps one orange marble. To keep the water theme, use gel in some shade of blue. Enhance the gel candle further by placing it on a small saucer that is decorated with a handful of sand. Cast a few additional shells and starfish onto the saucer.

The first step in making a gel candle is to attach the wick to the bottom of the glass container. Glue the wick in place and allow it to set before starting the next step. Once it has set, place a pencil across the top of the container, center it and tape it in place, or use two pencils and make a large X, which can then be taped on the center of the container top. Tug on the wick lightly to straighten it, then overlap it around the pencil and tape it in place. Gel for candles also can be obtained from local candle suppliers or on the Internet.

Gel comes in a variety of thicknesses. Thinner gels hold a fragrance less readily than a heavier gel will. Choose the type of gel that is best for your project.

Cut the gel into small pieces and place in a double-boiler. The gel blocks will need to reach the melting temperature; since that temperature varies slightly with different candle making dealers, it is suggested you use the information obtained from the business you order your supplies from. Use a metal spoon to stir the gel as its melting. Avoid wooden spoons or vigorous stirring as that can cause bubbles to form in the gel. If color will be added, it should be done so in increments of one small drop at a time.

Gel candles burn longer and are transparent, which allows embedded materials to be more visible. But though gel candles are beautiful in small containers, this type of candle should not be made large enough to contain two wicks.
