How to Draw Fairies

By: Laura Evans

Do you know how to draw fairies? Wouldn't it be interesting to live in a world that has fairies flitting through the air? While you probably will never live in a world with real, live fairies, you can create a world of your own by learning techniques for how to draw fairies.

Tips on How to Draw Fairies
First, remember to use a pencil when you start to draw your fairy. You will be erasing lines and changing straight lines to curves as your drawing progresses.

Think about nature. What in nature does a fairy most resemble? Fairies resemble, on a very simplistic level, butterflies. If you can draw butterfly wings from different angles, you are about halfway there on how to draw fairies. You can then take these wings and stylize them more to your taste.

Of course, fairy wings don't always look like butterfly wings. Study dragonflies, bats and other flying insects and animals to get other ideas.

How about the bodies of fairies themselves? Go back to the butterfly. The body of a butterfly is an elongated oval. Add an "egg-shaped" circle on top of the oval for the fairy's head.

The face of your fairy doesn't have to follow the "rules" of proportion for drawing faces. After all, fairies are creatures of your imagination. Therefore, you might want to draw larger eyes that are out of proportion with the rest of your fairy's face. Your eyes might be shaped like almonds and tilted at "unnatural" angles. Be creative.

If your fairy is going to have ears, try starting the ears by drawing triangles in their place. You can then reshape the triangles to get the curves that you want.

To work on the body, widen the butterfly oval. Then, draw a straight line near the bottom of the oval. This will be the bottom of the fairy's gown. Add two small circles about halfway down the fairy's body to be the fairy's hands. Then, sketch in the gown's arms leading to the hands. Two triangles at the bottom of the gown can become the gown's shoes.

This is a very basic fairy. In order to improve your drawing, take a look at how to draw bodies standing, sitting and in motion. It might also help to study how faces are traditionally drawn so that you can play with the proportions of your fairy's face.

By the way, don't forget to add a wand.
