How to Draw a Monkey

By: Laura Evans

Learn how to draw a monkey with these step-by-step instructions. Practice often and you'll learn how to draw a monkey by memory. As with learning to draw anything, keep frustration to a minimum by starting with pencil and keeping an eraser handy.

How to Draw a Monkey
To start the face, draw a flattened oval across your paper. Then, draw two circles on top of the oval. The circles should touch each other as well as the oval. Now, erase the areas where the two circles touch each other as well as the areas where the circles touch the oval.

Next, add a circle around what you just drew. The circle should be slightly larger than the first part of your drawing. In the very center of your new drawing, place a small upwards semicircle for the monkey's nose. Right above the nose, draw two small, thick vertical lines for the monkey's eyes.

For the ears, draw two circles about the same size on the outside of the circle in line with the eyes. Sketch in a smaller curve inside the top of each circle-ear connecting the circle-ear with the head so that the ears have upper "lips."

Draw in a smile in the lower part of the monkey's face to add some expression.

Now for the body. Draw an oval that intersects the face, leaving out the line that runs through the face's circle. In other words, don't draw in the imaginary line. Next, sketch a small circle that touches the left bottom of the oval-body. Then, draw a second circle next to the first circle. Repeat the process on the other side. These circles will eventually be your monkey's hands and feet.

For the arms, draw an outward curve that starts about one-third of the way up the head and connect the curve to where the two circles below meet. Repeat on the other side.

Finally, add a long snaky tail that appears from behind the monkey. The tail can curve out from either side of the body.

Add details to the monkey, not forgetting the hands and feet.

Remember that erasure is your friend. If you don't like a proportion or want to try something a little different, erase away!
