How to Draw a Rose
Have you ever watched water in a sink swirl around in circles, growing smaller and smaller, until the water is drained? Instead of drawing in circles, you are going to flatten the circle into an oval and add angles at the edges. This is actually easier than it sounds.
Start in the middle of what is going to be the center of your rose bud. Draw an arc with the curve facing upwards from left to right. Then, draw slightly larger arc with the curve facing down from right to left. Then, draw an arc above your original arc from left to right. Repeat the process below going right to left. One last arc over the top from left to right and you will have sketched the top and center of your rose.
To start on the petals, draw the shape of a wine glass underneath the bud, leaving out the stem of the glass. Then, draw a line from the right tip of the wine glass arching down to the center of the glass. If you like, you can create a petal on the left side of your rose by using the wineglass shape as a guide.
Draw five short lines on your swirls. First, starting on the right, draw an inward curving line that connects the point where your last arc stopped to the rose petal line below. Using the same type of curved line, connect the point where the next two arcs meet to the line below them. Draw the final line on the right side of the rose bud from the point where the first two arcs that you drew meet to the line below, continuing to curve inward. You are actually moving from the outside to the inside of the rose bud as you draw these lines.
On the left side of the rose bud, draw a line that is curved inward from the point where you started your first arc to the line below below. Follow this with a line curving inward from the point where the next two arcs connected on the left to the line below. On this side, you are moving from the inside to the outside of the rose bud when drawing your lines.
To finish the outline of your rose, draw a semi-circle under the rose bud. Then, draw a stem with leaves towards the bottom. The stem can be either curved or straight.
Now, you can color and shade your rose as you choose.
