Official Euchre Rules

By: Laura Evans

Like many card games, the official rules of euchre have variations on the theme. These variations allow a lot of flexibility when playing. Just make sure that everyone playing agrees to said rules before your game starts.

Official Rules of Euchre: No Trump

Instead of having a second round of bidding for trump if everyone passes on the first round, play a hand without any trump. Aces would then be the highest card.

Official Rules of Euchre: Bidding Variation

Instead of allowing two rounds of bidding as necessary or a no trump round, the cards are dealt again after every player passes the first time.

Official Rules of Euchre: Partners Best

When a player goes it alone, the player gives his or her partner the worst card in hand. The partner then gives the player the partner's best card.

Official Rules of Euchre: Joker High

In this variation, a Joker is added to the deck. The Joker is the best card to have no matter what the trump suit is. This Joker trumps the right bower.

Official Rules of Euchre: 32 Card Euchre

Use 7s and 8s to increase the number of cards in a deck to 32.

Official Rules of Euchre: Farmer's Hand

When a player is dealt three 9s or three 10s, if the player calls out "farmer's hand" before the bidding starts, the player can exchange the three cards for three cards in the kitty.

Official Rules of Euchre: No First Blood

The first player in a round can't lead with a trump card.

Official Rules of Euchre: Cutthroat for Three Players

When playing cutthroat euchre with three players, each player keeps individual scores. Scoring is the same as in standard euchre except that when a player is euchred, both of the opponents score two points. In addition, if a player wins all five tricks, the player gets three points rather than four.

Official Rules of Euchre: Cutthroat for Four Players

You can do away with partnerships when playing with four players, too. Simply use the scoring method for three player cutthroat.
