Uno Card Game Tips

Keep in mind that Uno is basically a game of chance. While you can strategize as much as you want, the whole thing may blow up in your face if someone calls out "Uno!" unexpectedly. That being said, these Uno game card tips will help keep you on your toes, perhaps literally, depending on how excited you get when you play Uno!

It is completely legal to count cards when playing Uno. There are no pit bosses or security cameras watching your moves. Keeping track of who is playing which number or color will give you an opportunity to switch gears on them as you desire.

While you may want to save your wild cards for the right opportunity, get rid of all of your other high point cards as soon as possible. That being said, don't hoard your wild cards until the last moment or you may end up with a bunch of useless cards that cost you 20 or 50 points each.

Try to keep at least one card of each color in your hand so that you have more flexibility when playing.

Memorize all of the penalties and don't be afraid to use them. After all, you want to win at all costs, right? The penalty rules of Uno are:

  • A player who is down to one card must call out "Uno." If you challenge the player after the player has made the discard down to one card, but before the player sings out "Uno," the player must pick up two cards.
  • Players aren't supposed to make suggestions to other players. If you agree to this rule before playing, that helpful soul will have to draw two cards.
  • If a card is played illegally, the player must take the card back and pick up two extra draw cards. If the illegal card was a "Wild Draw Four" card, the player must take four draw cards. However, the person who challenges the "Wild Draw Four" card is wrong and this card was played correctly, the challenger has to take six cards.
